First year apprentice has recipe for success after reaching national final

First Year Apprentice Chef Josh Root has the recipe for success after winning the regional final of a chef competition.

Josh cooked a 2 course meal for the Springboard Future Chef 2018 Competition which he had to produce with a small budget. Judges deemed his dishes the best and he now goes through to compete the national final in London on 12th March.

The 16 year old chef apprentice of Clitheroe is studying Level 2 professional cookery apprenticeship at Blackburn College while gaining invaluable practical experience as an apprentice at Northcote.

Josh said: “The whole competition has been a fantastic way of using what I have learnt as an apprentice to practice and hone my cookery skills. It is such an honour to be working alongside amazing chefs at Northcote and I am so grateful to the support I have received from Blackburn College, Springboard and my mentor.”

Mentored by Paul Maguire, Josh has successfully championed three previous heats to qualify as regional champion and will now proceed to the national final, held at Westminster Kingsway College in London.

“I am really excited to be travelling down to London for the final.” Josh said.

Paul Sharples, industry links manager at Blackburn College, said: “We are incredibly proud of Josh and how well he has done throughout the competition.

“The standard of the other competitors throughout the competition has been extremely high and it has been a real pleasure to see so many promising young chefs so engaged with cooking.”

Josh will travel to London on Monday 12th March for the final, an amazing achievement for one of our young and talented chefs.

About the competition

Springboard’s FutureChef has been designed to engage chefs and industry professionals to work with schools and inspire careers in hospitality at a local level throughout the UK. Aimed at young people between the ages of 12-16 years old, they learn to cook and engage with industry professionals in a range of activities. They gain experience and inspiration which can influence career choices.

Springboard is a national organisation which promotes hospitality, leisure and tourism as a great place to work and provides specialist services to businesses to attract talent.
