Two centuries have passed since Alexander Reid, founder of The Macallan, distilled the first batch of whisky in his curiously small stills in Speyside, Scotland, in 1824, beginning the extraordinary legacy of the single malt Scotch whisky.

Worthy of their name, our Exceptional Oak Casks are the single greatest contributor to the outstanding quality and distinctive aromas, flavours and natural colours of The Macallan. The Macallan Double Cask collection has a prominent, unmistakable sweetness which is attributed to the higher proportion of American sherry seasoned oak casks used for maturation.
Mastery of this union and the insistence of only using the finest ingredients results in a perfect partnership of both American and European oak sherry seasoned casks, that combined, create a collection with extraordinary tasting notes of toffee and vanilla.
The Macallan Sherry Oak Collection
We respect tradition and mature our whisky in oak casks seasoned with sherry wine hand-picked from Jerez, Spain. The Macallan Sherry Oak Collection features a series of single malt whiskies which are matured in predominantly European sherry seasoned oak casks, for richness and complexity.
This collection is matured in a higher percentage of European Oak sherry seasoned casks than American oak, which are responsible for transforming the rich, fruity and full bodied ‘new make’ spirit into a classic single malt characterised by tasting notes of ginger and spice, with a depth of flavour that develops through the range.
After seasoning in Jerez, Spain, the casks make their journey to Speyside and The Macallan Distillery, where they are filled with our ‘new make’ spirit. Our whisky benefits from spending the entire maturation process in these sherry seasoned oak casks, and the result is a truly sensorial experience with natural colour and intense flavours developed during the maturation.

The Macallan TIME: SPACE Mastery captures the complex influences of seasoning, oak origin, cask size and character in an exquisite release with an unparalleled depth of aroma, texture and flavour.
A one-of-a-kind The Macallan release celebrating the craft of the whisky makers who carefully selected 14 exceptional cask types to create TIME : SPACE Mastery. The whisky masters explored the diversity of The Macallan’s inventory and selected each cask at its peak of maturation, representing both European and American oak, celebrating cooperages, bodegas and sherry seasoning to create an exceptional whisky for the future. The predominant use of European Oak seasoned with sherry produces depth, dried fruits and soft spice. American oak brings roundness evoking sweetness.
