Quinta do Vale Meão

Quinta do Vale Meão’s 300-hectare property was purchased in 1877, completely unplanted, by the famous Dona Antonia Adelaide Ferreira. The estate was transformed by hundreds of workers into a 'chateau' with vineyards by 1894 and has continued to be run by Dona Antonia's descendants ever since. Vito, Xito and Luisa Olazabal represent the 5th and 6th generations to oversee this most iconic estate of the Douro.

Situated near the village of Pocinho in the Upper Douro Valley, the Quinta’s careful use of schist, granite and alluvial soil types, alongside their viticulture and winemaking philosophy, guarantees exceptional complexity in their wines. Whilst Vale Meão concentrates mainly on wine production, they also make a small quantity of outstanding port wine. Vale Meão vintage port was debuted in the wonderful 2000 vintage, and is made, unusually, more years than not.

Francisco 'Xito' Olazabal

Xito Olazabal is the visionary wine-maker at Quinta do Vale Meão and was key in persuading his father to evolve Vale Meão, and become wine producers as well as grape growers, back in the late 1990’s.

He was educated in Porto and subsequently studied oenology at Vila Real's winemaking faculty. Xito now spends most of his time in the remote high country vineyards bordering the Douro, valuing the influence of the environment for his creative work in the adega.

Like many great winemakers, Xito is totally consumed by his passion for perfection and continual improvement, much to the benefit of all who experience his wines.
