Glenapp Castle is a luxurious, award-winning five-star hotel providing an intimate level of service, with genuine attention to detail. It has great beauty in its period furnishings and interiors and also through the breath-taking gardens, forest and seascapes that surround the castle. As you sweep up the long treeclad drive you will glimpse the beautiful facade of the castle, encapsulating the romance of the Scottish baronial style, with magical towers, turrets and crenellations. Once inside, a world of Victorian splendour is yours.
Oak panelled halls lead to the heart of the castle, offering stunning views out to sea, taking in the famous volcanic outcrop of Ailsa Craig, then on to the Isle of Arran, Holy Island and on a clear day, the hills of Northern Ireland. Glenapp is a wonderful place to be inspired, to reflect, to recharge and reconnect – it is a place where you will feel ‘at home’ whether on your own or with a party of friends. Each of Glenapp’s 17 guest suites are individually and luxuriously styled with a unique combination of fabrics, furnishings, antiques and art. All the suites are spacious and there are a variety of suites with magnificent views over woodland and the surrounding seas – a perfect retreat after some outdoor adventures.
Glenapp Castle is famous for the quality of its cuisine with an award-winning restaurant which makes full use of the estate’s herb garden and the hotel’s own vegetable produce, the vast array of local sea catches as well as the famous Ayrshire lamb, beef and cheese. The castle also has an extensive wine cellar to complement guests’ choice from the menu. The castle and surrounding 36-acre estate has a rich and fascinating history.
The Glenapp Estate was already well established under the ownership of the Earl of Orkney when the industrialist, James Hunter (later to become Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Ayrshire) acquired it and commissioned the Edinburgh architect, David Bryce to design a suitably magnificent home for him. Many describe Glenapp as being a place, not only of great beauty, but as a place of inspiration, a place where creativity seems to flow and often important decisions are made. The combination of forest, seascape, space and tranquillity creates an atmosphere for planning, reflection and reconnecting.
One of the many wonders of Glenapp Castle are the surrounding gardens, much of which, including the Italian Garden were designed by Gertrude Jekyll (1843-1932). Also, the amazingly clean air and the lack of light pollution make for incredible night time skies. The local Galloway Forest Park is a Dark Sky Park (one of only two in Europe) and here at the castle, you can take advantage of stargazing experiences with an expert Dark Sky Ranger.
The castle is surrounded by some of the best golf courses in the world with Royal Troon, Prestwick, Turnberry and Western Gailes nearby. In addition, there are numerous activities and unique experiences for guests to enjoy either in the castle grounds or nearby such as falconry displays, perfume making masterclasses, coastal walks, salmon or trout fishing. Guests can also take time out for a massage, play croquet and tennis or the hotel can arrange a relaxing visit to a local coastal spa.
On the estate there is mountain biking, archery, clay pigeon shooting and for the more adventurous, there is the Glenapp Castle boat providing truly memorable sea safaris out to the iconic Ailsa Craig, Isle of Arran or further afield to the isle of Jura and Islay. Glenapp’s concierge team will be happy to design bespoke itineraries to cater for individual guest preferences.
In 2019 the castle is launching a new three-bedroom castle penthouse apartment with its own sauna, treatment room, private lounge and dining area, private kitchen and small outdoor space at the top of one of the castle towers. A truly unique space! Guests staying in the apartment will have their own chef and full 24 hour butler service.
For special celebrations, family gatherings or corporate events Glenapp Castle is available to hire on an exclusive use basis. Exclusive use means that guests will have the sole private use of the castle and its 36 acre estate and that the whole castle team are on hand to provide a high level of personal service.
